Real Photos vs Stock: Why UAE Websites Feel Fake
There is a handshake photo I have removed from at least a dozen Dubai sites. Same cropped suits, same extra-white teeth, same office that is not in the UAE. Visitors may not know the stock ID. They know it is not you. That is enough to discount the rest of the page.
This is not a rant against all libraries. I use licensed photos on this journal when I need a scene I cannot shoot this week. The rule is: stock can set a mood. It cannot pretend to be your clinic, your kitchen or your team.
Where stock does the most damage
- Hero: a foreign skyline or a fake boardroom behind your Arabic name
- Team: models labelled as “Dr. Ahmed” when Ahmed is a real person with a DHA licence
- Projects: interiors from another continent sold as your portfolio
- About: a diverse stock group that does not match the three people who actually answer WhatsApp
Portfolio lies are the worst. If I find them in an audit I replace them before we talk ads. Paid traffic onto fake work is how you buy angry calls. A redesign that keeps the fake photos is just a new frame on the same problem.
A shoot list you can finish on a Thursday
You do not need a campaign. You need a folder called website-real with:
- The door and the sign, in daylight
- The room where the work happens (chair, workshop, desk) — tidy, not staged into a show home
- Two or three people at work, faces visible if they consent
- One finished job you are proud of this year
- A detail: tools, fabric, a plate, a drawing — something only your trade has
That set will carry a homepage, an about page and a project teaser. For restaurants I want the pass and a plate, not a pizza from a library. For clinics I want the corridor you actually walk, not a US hospital corridor.
Phone photography that does not look like a WhatsApp dump
- Wipe the lens. I am not joking.
- Face a window. Turn off the overheads if they go green.
- Take a horizontal and a vertical of the same scene.
- Do not use the “vivid” filter. I will grade it to the brand later.
- Send the originals, not screenshots of Instagram.
If you have a showroom or a dining room that sells the business, hire someone for half a day. It is cheaper than another year of looking rented. Then I compress and lazy-load so the pretty files do not ruin Core Web Vitals.
When I still use stock
Abstract texture behind a quote. A city establishing shot when the story is the city, not your office. Icons. Never a fake employee. Never a project you did not do. Never a Google Images grab — that is how you get a usage invoice and a site that looks stolen.
If we must launch before the shoot, I use a strong typographic hero and a real logo, then swap photos in a week. That is more honest than a handshake.
If your site looks like everyone else’s stock folder, we can fix the pictures and the layout together.
Send three real photosConsent, staff and clients
Ask. Especially in clinics, schools and homes. A written yes in WhatsApp is enough for most SMEs. Offer to blur a face. Do not pull client villa photos from a group chat and publish them because they “looked nice.”
Good pictures make copy easier too. When the photo is specific, the sentence can be short.
Frequently asked questions
Can I launch with only stock?
Yes, then replace hero, team and project shots. Stock as a permanent face of the company is how you stay invisible.
Phone or photographer?
Phone in daylight is enough to start. Hire a photographer for a restaurant, showroom or a team you will use in ads all year.
Can I use Google Images?
No. That is not a licence. Use your own photos or a library you can prove you paid for.
I’ll art-direct a simple shoot list and put the files on the site properly.
